Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson

Friday Booking: Is there Room on the Broom?

Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson

Every so often, at least once a month, the Kid and I go to the library. She browses through the shelves, pulling books down by their visual appeal. I browse through the shelves, read a few sentences and put many of them back. Sometimes I find something I know the Kid will like, but she shakes her head emphatically “No.” I usually check it out anyway, not counting it against her book total, and then sneak it in to her bedtime reading. Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson (writer) and Axel Scheffler (illustrator) was one of those books.

“Mom, I don’t want that,” the Kid said when I first pulled out the book. “Well, tough. I’m reading it anyway,” I replied. “You can pick another book when I’d done.” Mollified that she was getting an extra book out of the bargain, she allowed that I may continue. And continue I did… over and over and over again. She loved the book so much that we read it two or three times for more than a week. Finally the library insisted on having its copy back. Thank goodness our local indie, Bookshop Santa Cruz, had a copy in stock.

Room on the Broom is the story of a witch who keeps losing things as she rides her broom through the air, accompanied by her lovely cat. As animals find the lost items, they ask to join her on her journey. Then something surprising happens and everyone bands together to find a solution. I hate giving away too much plot, so I’ll leave it to you to find out how it ends.

What makes it special is the combination of Sheffler’s funny illustrations and Donaldson’s knack for rhythm and rhyme. It is truly a treat to read aloud and add voices to. It’s one of those rare books that are so fun to read, you don’t mind reading it “AGAIN,” as the Kid often insists.

As the Halloween season comes nearer and nearer, consider adding Room on the Broom to your kids reading list.

May the magic of books make your days bright!
